Meng-lian Chief's Office

Original Name:
Mainglingyi
Chinese Name:
孟璉長官司
Notes:

Recorded as a "Chief's Office" under Yun-nan, Meng-lian was ruled by a Tai elite. In Shan it is known as Mong Lem and in Burmese Meung-lem. In some sources the name is given as Monglaem. According to Tan Qi-xiang (1982; 76-77), it was centred on what is today the county seat of the Meng-lian Dai-Lahu-Wa Autonomous County in Yun-nan, PRC, controlling territory which extended into what is today Shan State in Burma/Myanmar. A Sinicized historical account of Meng-lian is provided in Chinese and Tai in Dao Pai-han (1986).

For information on further Chinese sources relating to this polity, see Dao Yong-ming (1989; 278-83, 948-49), Fang Guo-yu (1987; 852, 880, 1071) and Gong Yin (1985; 129-30 and 1992; 551-52).
