Zhang Bin-yi, the commander of the Naval Forces Right Guard, died. Bing-yi was from Shi-shou County in Jing Subprefecture. He was brave and daring, wise and skilled in strategy. Initially he served Chen You-liang as an assistant in his Bureau of Military Affairs, and he was appointed to guard Shao-zhou. He nurtured and treated the troops properly, and he was kind and benevolent. The people were pleased with his administration and erected a stele for him, praising him as Preceptor of the Virtuous Prince (德王師). When Gan-zhou was captured [by Zhu Yuan-zhang’s forces], Bing-yi led his forces in coming to surrender. He was then appointed as vice commander of Gan-zhou Guard, while remaining in charge of the defence of Shao-zhou. Later he participated in the expedition against Guang-zhou and for his achievements, he was transferred to vice commander of Guang-zhou Guard, and he was transferred to guard Lei-zhou. There he constructed over 60 li of dykes at Dong-yang,to protect against the ocean’s tides. He also constructed the irrigation works at Te-lü Tang, and the people’s lives were greatly eased. When the maritime pirate Hei-mian Zhong [Black-face Zhong] pillaged Qin-zhou and Lian-zhou, Bing-yi led his troops in attacking and defeating the pirates, but Hei-mian Zhong fled to Jiao-zhi. Bing-yi pursued him and captured him. He was then transferred to vice commander of Hu-ben Guard. Subsequently, he was promoted to commander of the Naval Forces Right Guard. At this time, he died of illness. It was commanded that his son [Zhang] Liang-zhong should inherit the post of Independent battalion Commander of Shao-zhou.
