Wan-li: Year 14, Month 6, Day 24
8 Aug 1586
The Yun-nan Grand Coordinator Liu Shi-zeng, and the grand defender memorialized: "The Che-li Pacification Superintendent Dao Nuo-meng and Han Kai, a member of a ruling native-official family have each presented two elephants and have led their tribes in coming to allegiance. The "loyal mother" (忠母) Han Hong of the Meng-mi Pacification Commission was awed by Imperial might, realized achievements in the expedition against Ava-Burma and has been promoted and rewarded. Now, in gratitude for Imperial grace, she has sent elephants." The Ministry of War re-submitted the memorial. An Imperial order was issued noting that the elephants should be sent to the Court. Shi-zeng also re-memorialized a memorial from Liu Ting, the former regional vice commander who had carried out the duties of the Lin-an/Yuan-jiang assistant regional commander, but who was subsequently demoted and employed. It read: "The Mang chieftain was wild and lawless and he always relied on his elephant forces. On seeing the elephants, our troops were greatly frightened. I thus used salary funds to purchase three war elephants, who would charge against troops and horses. Now following the redeployments in the region, there is no need for the elephants. Permission is requested to send officials to present them on our behalf." The Emperor ordered that they be retained in the area and used for military defence.
