Mo Xun, administration commissioner of the right in Jiao-zhi, and Du Xi-wang, prefect of Jiao-zhou Prefecture, memorialized saying: "Jiao-zhi is secluded far on the Southern borders, but we have looked towards the culture of the Sages for many years. We were warmly embraced by the Emperor's compassionate desire to look on all equally. Prefectures and counties were established and thus Jiao-zhi became like other parts of the within. Those of us with some small ability were favoured with posts. The desire to repay this kindness has been with us day and night. Now it is heard that Bei-jing is being built and that the people from the four seas are coming to assist. We offer our small abilities in service but are unable to come personally. Thus in our stead we are sending Du Piao and other male members of our families, a total of 500 persons, led by the deputy county magistrate Li Xian, to request orders from Your Majesty and offer their small abilities." The Emperor read the memorial, then summoned Xian and other and encouraged them, saying: "You have come from the distance and hastened to serve, and thus your loyal intentions are apparent. However, the construction is progressing well and I do do not desire to greatly trouble you." Each person was rewarded with 20 ding of paper money and then they were sent home.
