Yong-le: Year 5, Month 5, Day 21
26 Jun 1407
The Xin-cheng Marquis Zhang Fu, regional commander of the force sent on expedition to punish Annam, and others, memorialized as follows: "Due to the circumstances, the expeditionary forces from Yun-nan, Guang-dong and Guang-xi now have depleted ranks. They now wish to select men from the Annam native forces to make up their deficiencies." This was approved and it was ordered that such people be given monthly rations. Further Imperial orders of instruction were issued as follows: "The troops engaged in the expedition have long been away from their parents, wives and children. They have travelled long over mountains and through rivers, and laboured and toiled hard to achieve the goal. Now it is Summer. You should select a comfortable place and station the troops there so that they may rest."
