Imperial orders were sent to the various guards and battalions under the five military commissions. They read: "The achievements and promotions of the officials and lieutenants who went on expedition to the South have been discussed. However, all of the troops who accompanied the army were also daring and able to realize achievements. You are to memorialize on those who achieved outstanding or great achievements. Those who realized outstanding achievements are to be promoted to platoon commanders while those who realized great achievements are to be promoted to squad commanders. They are then to be transferred to the vacancies left by the promotion of platoon and squad commanders. If their achievements exceeded even the outstanding level, consider appointing them as officials to reward their efforts."
