The Heir Apparent appointed Cao Ben as surveillance vice commissioner in the Yun-nan Surveillance Commission. Initially, for his achievements as a garrison commandant, Ben was appointed to successive official posts and finally to assistant surveillance commissioner in the Jiang-xi Surveillance Commission. For involvement in an offence, he was banished to Jiao-zhi to realize achievements. At this time, through gracious pardon, he was re-instated, promoted and employed.
