Mao Ke, administration vice commissioner of the left in Yun-nan, had previously been reduced in rank and it was ordered that he be employed elsewhere. The grand defender and grand coordinator memorialized: "Ke previously deployed troops and, in coordination with Si Lu, pacified Si Die through threats. The censors have all said that he is dissolute. However, his achievements have been observable over time and Si Lu also listened to his orders and commands. There is now a desire to soothe these yi and have them accord. Without Ke this cannot be done. It is requested that Ke temporarily remain in Yun-nan to soothe and settle Si Lu and so that he can order the latter to return the occupied land. After this task has been completed, Ke should be sent to a post in accordance with his demotion." The Ministry of War re-submitted the memorial and requested permission to send a despatch to the Ministry of Personnel to determine a position for him. At this time, it was proposed that Ke be appointed as surveillance vice commissioner in the Yun-nan Provincial Surveillance Commission and that he be temporarily retained in Yun-nan to soothe the yi. This was approved.
