Hong-zhi: Year 3, Month 5, Day 25
12 Jun 1490
Previously, an Imperial order was sent castigating Li Hao, the king of the country of Annam, for his crimes of invading Champa and for wrangling with and disturbing the people and yi of Jian-shui Subprefecture in our Yun-nan. An envoy sent by Hao submitted a memorial explaining that Champa had been riven by divisions as a result of fighting between native chieftains (Alt: the king and the chieftains). The memorial also noted that Yun-nan was the place where the natives of his country had formerly resided and that he would not dare violate the borders to cause trouble. Champa then again sent an envoy memorializing that Annam still wanted to swallow up their country and requested Imperial troops for protection. At this time, the Annam attendant minister Huang Bo-yang was still in the Institute and it was ordered that officials of the Ministry of War summon him to the Ministry of Rites to instruct him, saying: "When you return, order your king not just to engage in much talk. Both sides are to guard their own borders so that they can enjoy great peace. Otherwise, the Court will suddenly become greatly angered and the Imperial troops will crush your territory and it will be like the events during the Yong-le reign (1403-24). Can you afford not to repent!" The envoy departed, greatly frightened.
