Zhou Xin, a battalion commander in the Auxiliary Palace Guard, memorialized: "I have been ordered to accompany the expedition to Jiao-zhi. My younger brother works as an artisan for the government. However, our parents, who are both 85 years old, have no other sons." The Emperor ordered the Auxiliary Ministry of Works to exempt the younger brother from his work, so that he could devote himself to caring for his parents.
