Imperial orders were sent to the Xin-cheng Marquis Zhang Fu, "General for Subduing the Yi" and regional commander, and the Xi-ping Marquis Mu Sheng, deputy general of the left. The orders read: "The generals and troops who are accompanying the expedition should be looked after constantly as now they are to be employed. The names of those who have the ability to stand erect and fight bravely, to smash through passes and kill generals, to strike at the strong and to attack other forces, and thereby display outstanding merit, should be recorded in a register. When the army returns, they will be promoted and greatly rewarded for their efforts."
