The Emperor had ordered the Grand Secretary Yan Song and the Ministry of Revenue to seek out and purchase ambergris. At this time, none had been obtained. In the systems set down by the Imperial ancestors, of all the aromatics used by the palace and the Court, this was the most valuable... The Emperor upbraided them for trifling with Imperial commands and ordered them to find, collect and present it.
