The Vice Commissioner-in-chief Mu Lin, regional commander of Yun-nan, memorialized: "Dao Ba-xian, the pacification superintendent of the Che-li Military and Civilian Pacification Superintendency committed suicide and his younger brother Ban-ya Zhong and so on recommended that the elder brother San-bao-li-dai should take on the control of the region. Now Ban-ya Zhong and so on have engaged in rebellion, joined with Ba-bai and borrowed men and horses to engage in feuding. I wanted to deploy government troops to pacify them, but the Spring is warming and the miasmic vapours will be high. We cannot lightly deploy and advance the troops." The Emperor said: "San-bao-li-dai is the son of a concubine who tried to wrest the post from the appropriate heir, and plotted to kill Dao Ba-xian. This led to Ban-ya Zhong and so on borrowing troops to attack and try to kill him. Lin and so on are to send capable officials to go to soothe and instruct Ban-ya Zhong and so on to investigate who should inherit the post of pacification superintendent. They are then to memorialize so that arrangements can be decided. Both sides are to be instructed to rest their troops, so as to calm the strife."
