Previously, when the Annam tribute envoys were returning home, the official Fan Ke-jiu was sent to accompany them. When they arrived at Ping-xiang Subprefecture, the native official Li De-sheng tried to engage in extortion, noting that if they did not comply he would make things difficult. Ke-jiu would not permit the extortion and De-sheng would not allow them to pass. He then led the native chieftains Lu Zhu and so on in robbing the interpreter and the tribute bearers.
