Previously, when the Annam tribute envoys were returning home, the official Fan Ke-jiu was sent to accompany them. When they arrived at Ping-xiang Subprefecture, the native official Li De-sheng tried to engage in extortion, noting that if they did not comply he would make things difficult. Ke-jiu would not permit the extortion and De-sheng would not allow them to pass. He then led the native chieftains Lu Zhu and so on in robbing the interpreter and the tribute bearers. Yi people then entered through the pass and subsequently there was great disorder which led to Ke-jiu's death. The Supreme Commander and Minister Chen Rui advised of this.
