On this day, the Minister of Works Huang Fu who was in charge of the affairs of the Jiao-zhi Provincial Administration Commission returned to Long Subprefecture in Guang-xi. Earlier Liu Sheng had been killed and Fu hurried back. When he reached Zhi-ling Pass, he was captured by Li Li's defenders. Fu immediately tried to kill himself, but the defenders made great efforts to prevent him from doing so. They surrounded him and knelt before him, saying: "You, Sir, are the parent of the people of Jiao. The people of Jiao are craning their necks to see their parent. How can you kill yourself, Sir?" Li heard of this and said: "The Court sent officials to rule Jiao-zhi. If they had all been persons like Minister Huang, the people would have found peace and it would not have been necessary to raise troops." He speedily sent persons to go and protect Fu and to treat him with great propriety. He also said: "Immediately memorialize that we are sending the gentleman back to the Court." Subsequently, the chieftain Ruan Fu-li was sent to escort Fu across the border.
